Violent/Break: the solo mixtape series Vol II
Spring 2017

Explores dominant Western social and media understanding of the body Black as violent and its incongruity with Cat Mahari’s lived experiences of her African body as a site to on which and through which is enacted a wide range of violence and violent agency, and which can be accosted with little to no impunity anywhere. This incongruity presents an opportunity to radicalize contemporary articulations and understanding of past perspectives of violence. Violent/Breaks subjects of documentation are embodied practices and environments. Its title is a lived appreciation of a mixtape: its activation and creation as a site for disseminating African and cross-technological influences. Violent/Break, like a mixtape, is an emancipatory mode of mobilization and expression geared to new understanding through re-conceptualization. Premiere’s Spring 2017 at 31st&Brklyn.
